Taking on Private Patients

New Patients

At Birchwood Dental we believe dental health checks are one of the easiest ways to maintain good oral health. We can make sure your oral hygiene is exemplary, spot potential issues early and treat them before they become an issue.

During your oral health check your dentist will examine your mouth, paying attention to your teeth, gums and tongue. You may need X-rays to help us check for any warning signs related to gum disease or tooth decay.

Oral cancer screening

During your check-up we will also pay attention to the soft tissue in your mouth, looking for any changes and symptoms of oral cancer. Mouth cancer is responsible for over 1,800 deaths every year. That’s why it is so important to have regular checks-ups. The areas mouth cancer can affect is any area of your mouth, tongue and lips.

Scale and Polish

Patients who present with gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) will be offered the following:

  • Basic Periodontal Examination which will be carried out at your routine check-up appointments (all patients receive these if they have not had one in the previous 12 months)
  • Oral Hygiene Instruction will be given including discussion of risk factors eg. Smoking
  • Removal of calculus (tartar) – a build up on your teeth
  • Your gum health will then be reviewed at your next routine check-up appointment

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness and swelling (inflammation) of your gingiva, the part of your gum around the base of your teeth. It’s important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly. Gingivitis can lead to much more serious gum disease called periodontitis and tooth loss.

The most common cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene. Good oral health habits, such as brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups, can help prevent and reverse gingivitis.

NHS Hygienist appointments are only available following an assessment by a dentist if you need it to benefit your gum health.

You may choose to have a private scale and polish anytime and do not need to see a dentist first if you are a regular patient.
