Surgical Extractions

At Birchwood Dental, we try and save every tooth, however some problems may require surgical extraction to regain optimal dental health.

General Extraction

Teeth may be extracted for the following reasons:

  • A dental abscess has formed – root canal treatment may be possible as an alternative
  • The tooth is too broken down to restore (for example due to deep decay or a fracture)
  • As part of an orthodontic treatment plan to make space
  • The tooth is loose due to gum disease

Before a tooth is extracted, the area surrounding the tooth is numbed with a topical and injectable anaesthetic. Patients with extracted teeth sometimes need to take an antibiotic, and at the very least, take precautions following the procedure to ensure that infection doesn’t occur.

It is important to always get the advice of a dental professional if you are worried about any of your teeth. At Birchwood dental in Warrington we have the right equipment and sterile environment in which to perform this type of procedure with the utmost care and your recovery can be fairly quick. In the case of wisdom teeth extractions you may have some swelling after the procedure and discomfort that can be eased with over the counter painkillers.

Your dentist will discuss options available to you fully prior to any extractions.
